From ‘Prayer | Beyond the Border’ by Lin Shuen Long and the iconic bench of Heather B. Swann & Nonda Katsalidis, the day unfolded across Teshima like a quiet journey through art.

Teshima Art Museum…I always feel that I go in the artwork and experience it with whole senses.

Then adored ‘Particles in the Air’ by Noe Aoki, followed by the clear spring of Karato-shimizu and the island’s elegant stone walls.

Had hearty lunch at Teshima Factory beside the huge installation of Yokoo Tadanori: ‘Unfinished Self-Portrait — A Journey to Myself’.

At Les Archives du Cœur by Christian Boltanski, I archived my heartbeat! Now anyone can listen to it there under my name and read my message.

We continued to Needle Factory by Shinro Ohtake where creativity recreates the past.

All guided by the wonderfully connected and experienced Joh Morishima—who knows the island like family and gives us the VIP treatment. He even prepared Teshima’s famous strawberries for us to take home. It’s a quiet reminder of celebration that the Teshima’s harvest has become cherished once again.

Let’s receive tea and dessert hospitality with grace!
Open the lid from the front, and let any drops fall in the cup.
Place the lid upside down with both hands, securing it gently by the chataku (茶托).
Lift the teacup with both hands.
Rest the cup on your left hand and sip.
When you Enjoy the wagashi dessert with the kashi-yōji pick(菓子楊枝).
Divide the sweet gently, but not into pieces that are too small, or it may crumble.
When you finish the tea, wipe the rim where your lips touched, wipe the fingers of necessary.
Place back the lid carefully on the cup.
Wipe the kashi-yōji with the Kaishi paper(懐紙).
Take the used paper home with you.
Finally, thank your host for the tea and sweet treat.

Receiving hospitality beautifully is also part of respect.

[Naoshima Day Trip]

A crisp, beautiful Naoshima day—blue sky without a single cloud.
I greeted Kusama Yayoi’s Red Pumpkin, smiled at Shinro Ohtake’s “I ❤️ 湯,” and wandered through the calm intensity of Chichu Art Museum, the Valley Museum, and Lee Ufan Museum.

And then—inside Chichu—suddenly a big “bang” sound and a shake.
In that moment, we didn’t know it was an earthquake.
Only later, imagining what it means to experience a quake inside a museum that is literally “in the ground” felt genuinely scary… but at that moment, we didn’t feel as much shake as the people on the ground were describing. And I felt like Ando the architect protected us…

I was grateful to step back into the light alive—and continue to Naoshima New Museum, focused on Asian contemporary art.
The piece that stayed with me most: Cai Guo-Qiang’s *Head On*.
Wolves mid-charge—discipline, momentum, and an invisible wall you only notice when you arrive.

A day that held both stillness and movement… and ended with deep appreciation for art, architecture, and the bright sky above Naoshima.

It is most commonly practiced in rooms with Tatami mats, where it serves as a sign of respect and mindfulness. You will encounter Seiza during the Way of Tea, calligraphy, or when visiting traditional Japanese spaces like temples and Ryokans. To sit by Seiza, maintain a straight posture as if the crown of your head is being pulled upward by a string.

How to Seiza:
The Descent: From a standing position, slide one foot back and lower your body straight down.

The Flow: Sink straight down smoothly, as if you are sinking into water, avoiding any forward or backward tilt.

Kiza (跪座): While sitting on your heels, slide the rear knee forward to align it with the other.

The Completion: Flatten your feet and settle into Seiza (正座), a seated position.

This quiet sinking motion demonstrates a controlled, humble presence and Seiza sitting shows respect to those around you.

【Setouchi Triennale 2025 / Fall】

Cruising beneath the Seto-Ohashi Bridge, I felt the quiet excitement of a day shaped by calm waves and soft light.
The Setouchi Triennale was born from a wish to bring smiles back to island elders — a spirit that feels deeply connected to Japanese etiquette and respect for place.

Here, art is not separate from life. Even shadows, air, and old school buildings become something meaningful when we slow down and truly see.

As the Setouchi Sea shimmered in the afternoon sun, I felt the festival living gently through the islands and their people.

Ancient Respect in Modern Time @japanese_etiquette
[ Hōnōmai : Dedication Dance]

I was truly honored to be a part of the annual observance for Buei Nakano at Rengeji Temple in my home place, Kagawa Prefecture. His life, dedicated to securing our independence and improvement, perfectly embodies great kindness and respect.

We dressed in our traditional attire kimono, and the ceremony began with an act of deep sincerity: offering sake and incense at his tomb and praying together. It’s a visible act of respect that connects us to our history.

The heart of the observance was the Hōnōmai (奉納舞), or Dedication Dance. The history of dedication dance stretches back to ancient Shinto rituals, where dances were offered to invite the divine. Today, it remains a defining Japanese form that expresses profound respect and gratitude. I was privileged to support the performers by playing the Japanese drum (Shime-Taiko)!

This event shows that Japanese etiquette is a living tradition where our inner feeling of respect is elegantly reflected in our beautiful, time-honored behaviors and forms.

The date shifts annually because it follows the old Lunar Calendar, on the 15th night of the 8th month, and in 2025, it falls on October 6th.

We dedicate Tsukimi Dango—small, round rice dumplings stacked in a pyramid. Their shape mimics the full moon and represents a perfect harvest. I’ve created a special ikebana arrangement featuring the essential Susuki (pampas grass). Susuki symbolizes the harvest and is traditionally believed to ward off evil spirits. And yellow round mums represent the full moon and rice dumplings.

Beyond quiet gazing, this is a night for family and community. Across Japan, neighborhoods hold festivals with music, dance, and games—a beautiful display of shared kindness and connection.

We were so excited to share this incredible trip with our exchange students!

Our day was full of amazing discoveries:

A heartfelt thank you to the Japan Coast Guard for their tireless work keeping the coast safe.

Witnessing nature’s power at the Kurushima Strait’s whirlpools. We also had a unique view of Imabari’s famous shipbuilding industry up close from the cruise.

Enjoying a taste of local charm with the delicious pork and eggs over rice.

And soaking in the history at the majestic Imabari Castle and making a prayer at Fukiage Shrine.

Imabari offered a wonderful lesson in Japanese values. From our deep respect for the Japan Coast Guard and the local craftsmanship, to enjoying food that brings people together, every experience reflected this thoughtful way of life.

At the end of June, many shrines in Japan hold a ritual called 夏越の大祓Nagoshi no Ōharae—a time-honored ceremony to purify the body and spirit. The main purpose is to cleanse the kegare (spiritual impurities) that have accumulated over the first half of the year and to pray for a healthy and peaceful second half of the year.
A central part of this ritual is Chinowa Kuguri, where people walk through a large ring made of chigaya grass, believed to protect against illness and misfortune.
How to perform Chinowa Kuguri:
1. Cleanse your hands and mouth at the shrine.
2. Stand before the Chinowa and bow.
3. Walk through the ring in a figure-eight pattern:
– First pass: step in with the left foot and circle left
– Second pass: right foot and circle right
– Third pass: left foot and circle left again
Recite:
「祓へ給ひ清め給へ守り給ひ幸へ給へ」
(“Purify me, cleanse me, protect me, and bless me.”)
4. After the final pass, proceed to the main shrine and offer your prayer.

For six years, I’ve had the honor of creating large-scale installations with two fellow artists at the Issho-Honryu Ikebana Exhibition. This year, inspired by the newly opened Kagawa Arena, we reimagined its form using traditional bamboo crafting techniques—splitting and shaping them like building two giant kago (baskets).
The result? A bold, oval flower bed bursting with sunflowers, celebrating energy, unity, and the spirit of Kagawa. It became one of the most loved pieces of the exhibition.
