Guided by Kumiko
Ikebana has been part of my study of Japanese aesthetics for many years. In each session, I guide you to look closely at the material in front of you—its direction, character and natural movement—then discover how line and ma can bring the arrangement to life.

Seeing the Life in a Line
Before a branch is placed, it is first observed. Its curve, direction and natural tendency suggest how it wants to be seen.
A branch is not treated as a neutral material to be shaped into a predetermined form. Its irregularities, bends and new growth can become the character of the arrangement.
Flowers are considered in the same way. The direction of a bloom, the turn of a leaf and even a small bud can influence how the whole composition develops.
As these individual lines come together, the spaces between them become equally important. Ma gives each element room to remain distinct while allowing the arrangement to feel connected as a whole.

What the Experience Is Like

Observe the Material
We begin by looking closely at the branches and flowers—their direction, curve, weight and natural character.

Find the Main Line
A few stems establish
the movement of the arrangement, following the way the material naturally grows and reaches.

Create Ma
Space is left between the lines so that each branch and flower has room to breathe and be seen.

Bring It Into Balance
Small adjustments bring the lines, flowers and empty space together while keeping the arrangement lively and natural.

Ikebana
At the heart of Ikebana are nature and Ma (間)—the space that allows each line to be seen.
Branches and flowers are arranged to retain the character they have in nature: alive, facing outward and reaching upward rather than simply filling a container.
The base is kept close, while the composition opens as it rises. Space is deliberately left between the lines, giving them room to breathe and allowing their individual beauty to emerge.
The result is not fullness, but a sense of life, movement and balance.
